August 15, 2020 - NMFC Changes Become Effective

On July 16, 2020, the Commodity Classification Standards Board (CCSB) issued Supplement 2 to NMF 100-AT. The National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC) class code changes will go into effect on August 15, 2020. While a few of the changes are noted below, please review the full list, linked here, to be aware of all changes and updates.

Sample of the Affected Commodities

Boats, inflatable, deflated, with or without rigid hull or deck sections (New NMFC 24650): viz: Boats NOI, catamarans, kayaks, lifeboats, life rafts or rescue boats, pedal boats, rigid inflatable boats with 3 density-based classes (85, 125 and 250). See supplement for current items impacted.
Boats or Boat Sections (New NMFC 24670): viz: Boards (water sports), boat or boat sections NOI, cabins, canoes, catamarans NOI, deck houses, hulls, kayaks, pedal boats NOI, pontoon boats, sailboats. Classes based on packaging and length of article (300, 400 and 500). See supplement for current items impacted.
Boxes or Cartons, fiberboard or paperboard, with or without components of other materials (New NMFC 29785) 11 density range classes (60 through 400). The following items will be canceled and replaced with NMFC 29785: 28920, 29205, 29240, 29250, 29285, 29400.
Personal Watercraft (NMFC 25095): Changed from class 150 to 175.

April 25, 2020 - NMFC Changes Become Effective

On March 26, 2020, the Commodity Classification Standards Board (CCSB) issued Supplement 1 to NMF 100-AT. The National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC) class code changes will go into effect on April 25, 2020. View a full list of the classification changes by clicking here.

Sample of the Affected Commodities

Bath Tubs (NMFC 158260): Currently 11 density-based classes (65 through 400). Will be based on both packaging and density (classes 100, 110, 175, 200, 300 and 400). Will also apply to bathtubs or shower liners, surrounds or walls.
Cigarettes or Cigars (NMFC 47770): Class 85 will be canceled. New NMFC 183120 has three density-based classes (85, 110 and 200).
Compressors, Air NOI or Air Ends (NMFC 118100): Current classes (65, 70, 85, 92.5, 125 and 150) will be classes 70, 77.5, 100, 110, 175 and 200.
Eyeglasses, Spectacles (NMFC 57830): Currently for eyeglasses or spectacles only and class depends upon if magnifying, on a display rack/stand or if used for charitable organization only. Will now include sunglasses and will have two density-based classes (125 and 200).
Filter Stock, Paper (NMFC 150970): Currently class 65. Will have two density-based classes (92.5 and 150).
Food Stuff, Not Frozen (NMFC 73227): Fish or shellfish, juices, meats, milk and/or cream and cream substitutes removed from this NMFC number and assigned their own respective NMFC numbers.
Humidifiers (NMFC 26580): Currently class 85. Will be changed to class 150.
Marshmallows (NMFC 40085): Currently class 85. Will have two density-based classes (100 and 175).
Tobacco (NMFC 47830): Class 85 will be canceled. Two new items: NMFC 183160 (smokeless), classes 77.5 and 100. NMFC 183170 (smoking), classes 92.5, 125 and 175.

January 4, 2020 - NMFC Changes Become Effective

On December 5, 2019, the Commodity Classification Standards Board (CCSB) posted amendments to the National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC) class codes. These amendments will go in effect on January 4, 2020. To see the full list of classification changes, click here.

Definitions of or specifications for lift truck skids, pallets or platforms (NMFC 265): Amended to update the definition of and construction requirements for lift truck skids, pallets and platforms
Drugs, chemicals, medicines and other articles (NMFC 60000): Canceled; if used, will bill at class per density
Grates, fireplace (NMFC 69430 / 69440): Canceled; see NMFC 69420
Heaters, heat exchangers (NMFC 69457): Canceled; see item 69420
Heaters, other than portable (NMFC 26460): Class change from 85 to 150
Heaters, wall insert or baseboard type (NMFC 26500): Class change from 70 to 125
Lanterns or flashlights (NMFC 109800): Class 110 for all units with or without batteries
Posts or poles, utility (lighting, telephone, electric railway) (NMFC 161145): New item, class dependent on length and density
Microwave ovens, toaster ovens, air fryers and pizza ovens (NMFC 26720): New item; class 175 on less than 8 per cubic foot (PCF), class 92.5 on greater than 8 PCF
Moldings (NMFC 38030): Canceled; see NMFC 38035, class dependent upon length and density
Pots and pans, cast aluminum (NMFC 52930): Canceled, provisions moved to NMFC 52895. Cookware or bakeware, aluminum now class 125
Sauces, condiments, dips or spreads (NMFC 74700): New item. Sauces, condiments and spreads formerly under 73227 and dips formerly under 72790.
Searchlights or spotlights, handheld (NMFC 109110): Class changed from 85 to 150
Stairs, SU, noi, 38180 (NMFC 38180): Now SU or in SU sections, formerly class 85, now based on length, dimensions and density
Traps, bullets or target (NMFC 17670): Canceled; see NMFC 187130. Was class 85, now density based, class 70 or 100

August 24, 2019 - NMFC Changes Become Effective

On July 25, 2019, the Commodity Classification Standards Board (CCSB) posted amendments to the National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC) class codes. These amendments will go in effect on August 24, 2019. Click here to see the complete list of changes.

Sample of the Affected Commodities

Air Coolers, water evaporative type (NMFC 114130): Amended to provide classes based upon packaging and density.
Broilers, Cookers or Roasters (NMFC 25840): Electric items including Slow Cookers, Pressure Cookers or Rice Cookers. Cancels items 25930 and 52880.
Cords, power supply (NMFC 61490): Amended to state “for permanent attachment to electrical appliances, machines or tools.” Class changed from 65 to 70.
Mobility Scooters (NMFC 56834): New classification for electric mobility scooters having three or more wheels with a density break at 5 PCF.
Pressure Regulators, Pressure Reducing Valves or Pressure Relief Valves (NMFC 127220): Item 127200 will be canceled with reference to item 127220, which is amended to a density-based item with breaks at 8 and 12 PCF.
Siding, plastic (NMFC 170580): Amended to provide classes based upon greatest dimension and density; to name “siding, plastic, with or without backing or insulation of same or other material.”
Toilet Preparations (NMFC 59420): This existing classification becomes a density-based item with breaks at 10 and 15 PCF. The reference to item 60000 is removed and item 6000 is amended to remove a reference to Toilet Preps.
Water heaters, tankless (NMFC 26525): Amended to a density-based item with a break at 8 PCF.

April 27, 2019 - NMFC Changes Become Effective

Sample of the Affected Commodities

Mattresses, Compressed and Rolled (NMFC 79545): a new item with classes of 100 and 175.
Mattresses, NOI, Upholstered Box Springs or Waterbed (NMFC 79550): currently classes 200 and 250; changing to class 300 only.
Automobile Body Parts (NMFC 18260): will no longer include brush guards, grille guards, pull/push bars, bumpers or bumper fittings. These will have their own, new NMFC numbers.
Paints (NMFC 149980): current classes are: 55, 60, 85 and 92.5; new classes are 55 and 85 only and will no longer apply to combustibles.
Flammable or Combustible Liquids (NMFC 44500): new item which can be used for some flammable or combustible paints (liquid).
