FMCSA Proposes Commercial Vehicle Registration Fee Reductions in 2020 and 2021

In the issue of the Federal Register published on August 27, the FMCSA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration) announced its proposal for a new rule that would reduce commercial motor vehicle registration fees in 2020 and 2021. The proposed changes would lower the annual fees for motor carriers, freight forwarders, brokers, leasing companies and private motor carriers of property. The 2020 fees would decrease by 12.82 percent as compared to rates in 2018, while the 2021 fees would see a 4.19 percent decrease as compared to 2018. The rates are based upon the amount of trucks a carrier has in its fleet and would adjust accordingly. To read more, click here.

Who can see your information? This month’s Ascent Compliance Circular focuses on the ins and outs of electronic vessel manifest confidentiality. With varying regulations governing the disclosure (Freedom of Information Act) or confidentiality (Department of Homeland Security) of certain records, it can sometimes be challenging to know who can have access to what information in the international world of trade. Importers and exporters, along with their brokers, forwarders and ocean carriers, must follow certain guidelines as to what information must be disclosed and what must be kept confidential in the commercial environment.
