Federal Highway Administration Announces Funding for Transportation Technology Grants

On June 12, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) announced that $60 million in grant funding is available to cities and states seeking projects which involve transportation technologies under the Advanced Transportation and Congestion Management Technologies Deployment Program. The program has been created under the Fixing America’s Surface Transportation Act. According to Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao, “this program puts a priority on promoting innovative solutions that improve safety and mobility for our nation’s drivers.” Read more here.

Plan to Rebuild Baltimore’s Howard Street Tunnel Seeks Federal Funding

Maryland officials, the Port of Baltimore and CSX are pursuing federal assistance to rebuild Baltimore’s 1.7-mile Howard Street Tunnel. It will cost approximately $470 million to allow clearance for double-stack freight cars and $1-3 billion to renovate the entire tunnel. Maryland Governor Larry Hogan stated that the reconstruction “will create thousands of jobs, open up new trade lanes for the port and improve overall freight rail service across our nation.” To read more, click here.


Canadian ELD Mandata to Begin in June 2021

On June 13, Marc Garneau, Canadian Minister of Transport, announced that a mandate of electronic logging devices (ELD) for commercial vehicle drivers and bus drivers will go into effect on June 12, 2021. All of the devices used by drivers must be certified in order to avoid the risk of noncompliance and/or rigged devices. Transport Canada estimates that the ELD mandate will “reduce the risk of fatigue-related collisions by ten percent.” For more on the mandate, click here.

Major World Banks Launch Initiative for Responsible Ship Finance

On June 18, it was announced that 11 banks, which represent about $100 billion of the global ship finance portfolio, have become the inaugural signatories of the Poseidon Principles, a climate change agreement that will “provide a framework for integrating climate considerations into lending decisions to promote international shipping’s decarbonization.” The Principles focus on four key points: assessment of climate alignment, accountability, enforcement and transparency. Panama Canal Authority Proposes Toll Changes

On June 14, the Panama Canal Authority (ACP) issued a statement announcing its proposal to modify its tolls structure. The statement indicated the start of a 30-day span for public comment, which will conclude on July 15, 2019. Panama Canal Administrator Jorge L. Quijano stated that the “proposed modifications will increase transparency and flexibility, among other improvements, to ensure the Panama Canal remains competitive and optimal for the industry today and moving forward.” Read more here.

Walmart Debuts “Delivery Unlimited” Grocery Delivery Subscription

Walmart Grocery, which allows shoppers to shop for groceries online and pick up in-store or opt for delivery, has expanded its offerings with a new “Delivery Unlimited” subscription. For $98 yearly or $12.95 monthly, Walmart customers will be able to receive unlimited deliveries. The program is currently being tested in Houston, Miami, Salt Lake City and Tampa. Read more here.

U.S. Retail Sales Increase in May 2019

Data released by the U.S. Department of Commerce on June 14 reported that May retail sales showed 0.5 percent growth compared to April and 3.2 percent growth annually. Learn more here.
