FMCSA Proposes Interstate Haul Program for Commercial Drivers Under 21

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has announced its efforts to create a pilot program allowing commercial drivers aged 18-20 to drive big rigs on the interstate. This program is similar to one that exists for commercial drivers under 21 who have served in the military. Learn more about the initiative here.

Houston Ship Channel Could Reopen This Week Following Toxic Spill

On May 10, a crash involving a 755-foot oil tanker and a tugboat towing two barges caused a spill of approximately 11,280 barrels of gasoline. In the wake of this incident, travel through the channel has been restricted and dozens of ships have been waiting to enter and exit the waterway. Read more here.

Beijing Rumored to Increase Tariffs on $60 Billion in American Goods

Following the May 10 increase of S301 tariffs, the trade dispute between the U.S. and China continues. On May 13, China’s Finance Ministry made the announcement that it would raise tariffs on a plethora of American goods from ten percent to between 20-25 percent. Read more here.

Administration Expected to Delay Auto Tariffs by Six Months

The U.S. administration is expected to delay auto tariffs on European imports by as much as six months. In the event that a decision is not made by the Saturday, May 18 deadline, administration is granted another 180 days to review and determine the necessity of an additional auto tariff, as long as it is actively involved in negotiation with trading partners. Countdown for Bringing Chinese Imports to the U.S. Ahead of New Tariffs Begins

The U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) has announced that the List 3 tariff increase from ten percent to 25 percent is in effect for all goods that sailed from China on or after May 10, 2019 and are entered into the commerce of the U.S. on or after May 10, 2019. Goods which were already on the water prior to May 10, 2019 and arrive in the U.S. for entry prior to June 1, 2019 will not be subject to the 25 percent, only 10 percent. List 4 has also been revealed and public comment is open through mid-June. For more information, click here.

Walmart Plans to Bring Vet Clinics to 100 Stores

Starting May 14, Walmart customers will be able to fill prescriptions for dogs, cats, horses, fish, birds and livestock online via the Walmart Pet Rx website. The retailer also plans to increase the number of in-store vet clinics across the U.S. from 21 to 100 by the end of Q4. Learn more here.

U.S. Retail Sales Dropped by 1.2 Percent in April

Following a 1.7 percent jump in retail sales in March, the U.S. Commerce Department stated that Americans cut down on spending by 1.2 percent last month. Sales of cars dropped by 1.1 percent and sales at electronics and appliance retailers dropped by 1.3 percent. Read more here.
