FMCSA Will Use ELD Data To Adjust Hours Of Service Rules

According to Supply Chain Dive, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) is using raw data from ELDs to propose changes to hours of service rules. Those changes include:

  • 100 air-mile “short haul” exemption.
  • On-duty exemptions during adverse driving conditions.
  • Mandatory 30-minute rest breaks.
  • Possibility of reinstating the option to split 10-hour off-duty rest breaks for sleeper-enabled trucks.

Truckload Linehaul Rates Continue To Increase In February 2019

In the latest Cass Freight Index Report, Truckload linehaul rates increased in February for the 17th straight month. Linehaul costs increased 5.4 percent year-over-year (with an index value of 138.4). See more here.

New East-West Routes Offered In And Out Of Port Of Savannah For Chilled Produce

New routes to Europe and Asia for transporting chilled produce are now offered out of the Port of Savannah. Georgia’s proximity to growers in the Southeastern United States decreases inland routes and transit times for time-sensitive cargo such as fresh produce. See more here.

Suppliers And Buyers React To Tomato Trade Policy Changes

On February 6, 2019, the US Commerce Department notified Mexico it would withdraw from the 2013 Suspension Agreement on Fresh Tomatoes. As a result, the US Commerce Department will resume investigation into Mexico’s dumping practices on May 7. See more here.

Significant Port Congestion At The Port Of Long Beach

According to the JOC, multiple terminals at the Port of Long Beach are experiencing significant congestion. One of the main factors is the surplus of empty containers arriving to the port, causing delays at terminal gates. See more here.

Walmart Could Penalize Suppliers Who Do Not Meet New OTIF Standards

In an effort to reduce inventory levels, Walmart’s new OTIF requirements are expected to be implemented in May 2019. Suppliers who do not meet these new requirements could face a three percent fine for the cost of goods sold for each case that does not meet Walmart’s delivery requirements. See more here.

Walmart Releases New Private Label Brand Of Children’s Tablets

Walmart is expected to launch a new line of private-label kids’ tablets. According to 8th and Walton, this launch could lead to new opportunities for Walmart private-label suppliers who ship technology products. See more here.
