United States Transportation Secretary Announces $495M in Airport Infrastructure Grants

On June 24, Elaine L. Chao, U.S. Transportation Secretary, made the announcement that the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) will be providing $495 million in airport infrastructure grants to 327 airports across the country. It is expected that more than $57.1 million of said funding will be used for improvements at eight Texas airports. Learn more here.

Illinois State Police Launch “Trooper in a Truck”

Illinois State Police and the Illinois Trucking Association have teamed up to create the “Trooper in a Truck” program, which places an Illinois State Trooper in a big rig to patrol highways. The trailer cab’s higher vantage point allows troopers to spot and pull over drivers who are not following the rules of the road. Learn more here.

Mexico Becomes First Party to Approve the USMCA

On June 19, the Mexican Senate voted to ratify the United States, Mexico and Canada Agreement (USMCA). Should the deal be approved by the U.S. and Canada, it would replace the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). Mexico Senator Verónica Martínez García stated that “the USMCA is synonymous with opportunity in the short and long term.” Learn more here.

S301 List 3 Tariff Exclusion Requests

According to a notice issued last week by the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR), requests for S301 List 3 exclusions may be submitted between June 30, 2019 and September 30, 2019 through the USTR website. Government of Canada Invests in Port of Belledune Transportation Infrastructure

On June 24, the Government of Canada announced that it will invest $17 million to increase capacity at the Port of Belledune and assist in transporting Canadian goods to international markets. The project will improve the port’s ability to move cargo to terminals and vessels. Read more here.

Walmart Begins to Test Autonomous Vehicles for “Middle Mile” Deliveries

Walmart has started exploring the option of using autonomous vehicles for “middle mile” deliveries between the retailer’s warehouses and in-store pickup kiosks. Walmart is using Ford vans to test the service in conjunction with Gatik AI, the startup responsible for the technology. While Walmart CEO Greg Foran stated that the vehicles are a “no brainer,” the U.S. is still several years away from authorizing autonomous vehicles to drive on the highway. Read more here.

Americans Expected to Spend $6.7B Celebrating Independence Day 2019

According to a survey conducted by the National Retail Federation (NRF) and Prosper Insights & Analytics, Americans will spend almost $6.7 billion in celebration of Independence Day. It is predicted that 86 percent of Americans will partake in Independence Day celebrations this year. Learn more here.
