Last week, US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Commissioner Kevin McAleenan announced that CBP will reassign up to 750 officers from ports of entry along the US-Mexico border. These officers will assist US Border Patrol with processing an increased number of migrant crossings.

The US-Mexico border is a crucial artery in the global economy. According to the Commerce Department, more than $611 billion worth of goods cross the border annually. In addition, more than 1,000 trucks pass through the Port of Calexico East, California and more than 11 daily international trains pass through Laredo, Texas.

Shipments processed at the US-Mexico border could experience delays due to the reassignment of CBP officials from critical ports of entry. The effects of disrupting cross-border shipments between the US and Mexico could include negative impacts on major US automakers’ supply chains and sudden price increases for grocery shoppers.
