CVSA’s Annual International Roadcheck to Take Place on June 4-6
Across North America, an estimated 9,000 inspectors will be examining vehicles during the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA)’s International Roadcheck, taking place on June 4-6. The focus of this year’s inspections is steering and suspension systems. On average, 17 commercial vehicles are inspected each minute during this span of time. FMCSA Launches Pilot Program for 18-20 Year Old Truck Drivers with Military Experience
On June 3, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) announced it is accepting applications for its pilot program, which will allow drivers between 18 and 20 years old with military experience to operate big rigs on the interstate. The purpose of the initiative, which is set to run for as many as three years, is to assist reservists and veterans with obtaining jobs in the trucking industry. Read more about the program here.
Tariffs on All Mexican Imports to Go into Effect on June 10
In an announcement from the White House on May 30, 2019, imports from Mexico will have a five percent tariff imposed effective June 10, 2019. The tariff will increase to ten percent on July 1, 2019 and continue to increase by five percent each month until it reaches 25 percent. The effect of this announcement on the passage of the new United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) is yet to be seen. Mexico is the United States’ largest trading partner, sending over $350 billion in goods last year – including things like produce, cars and car parts. For more on Mexico tariffs, click here.
Port of Savannah Plans to Invest $3 Billion to Improve Rail Service Connection to St. Louis
The Georgia Ports Authority announced that it is partnering with the St. Louis Regional Freightway to form a new rail connection that is expected to move cargo more efficiently to the Midwest. The Port of Savannah’s $3 billion dollar investment includes plans to increase its containerized cargo capacity from five million TEUs to eight million TEUs by 2028. Additionally, a $220 million rail terminal being constructed is set to be the continent’s largest on-terminal rail facility by 2020. For more on the partnership, click here.
India Removed from Generalized System of Preference (GSP)
The U.S. administration has determined that India has not met some of the basic agreements of the GSP program and, as such, India will be terminated from the GSP designation effective today, June 5, 2019. Any import cargo from India entered into the commerce of the U.S. as of June 5, 2019 must be entered as Non-Special Program Indicator (SPI) cargo, subject to the normal duty rates assigned to that particular tariff. Walmart Debuts New “Urban Supercentre” Prototype Store in Canada
Walmart has announced the debut of its new Urban Supercentre concept store in Toronto, with a second location opening in Thornhill, Ontario in 2020. The prototype store features “Fast Lane” checkout, which lets customers scan products with the My Walmart App while shopping and check out via scanning a bar code that charges to an on-file credit card, providing an efficient and seamless retail experience. Specialty Food Outranks All Food in Retail by 3:1 Ratio
According to a report from the Specialty Food Association, specialty food sales have grown at a rate of 10.3 percent, while all food at retail has grown at a rate of 3.1 percent. This comes during a time when millennials have greater buying power and consumers continue to move toward healthier, more convenient food choices. Phil Kafarakis, President of the Specialty Food Association, stated that “diverse consumer lifestyles are taking specialty foods mainstream.” To learn more, click here.
